Platts' 7th Annual Liquefied Natural Gas Conference

Midstream Gas Assets: Acquisitions & Divestiture Summit

Infocast offered a unique venue for active market players to discuss their perspectives on the market for midstream assets.  Kyle Smith, Managing Director - Carbon and Energy Management Services presented at the Summit Workshop on "Valuing the Carbon Component in Midstream Asset & AD Deals and Utilizing it to Maximize Asset Value."  Pace gave an overview of emerging carbon policies, identifying key asset relationships with carbon, optimizing the asset's carbon position, performing a carbon due diligence prior to sale, evaluating an asset's carbon position during due diligence, and attributing discounts/premiums to carbon components.

Both Mr. Dimitri Shanin, Senior Consultant - Carbon Management Services and Mr. Chris Berendt, Director - Environmental Markets & Policy spoke at this popular conference and exhibition!

Mr. Dimitri Shanin discussed leading financial accounting methodologies for GHG emission allowances to offer perspectives on potential consistency with future carbon accounting systems.  The goal of this analysis was to define the business logic of GHG emissions accounting and calibrate carbon risks and opportunities that are imbedded in both methodologies.

Mr. Chris Berendt presented on the development and design of carbon markets, the regulatory pathways out of the current uncertainty, as well as the role of carbon finance in the new generation-build environment. 

In addition, the Pace exhibit booth was a huge hit!  Hope to see you next time!

Platts 6th Annual Gas Storage Outlook

Platts provided a forum for gas storage operators/developers, pipeline owners/developers, LNG operators/developers/producers, gas customers, and gas storage investors to discuss the ever-changing storage sector dynamics in North America.

Mr. James Diemer, Managing Director - Fuels, Regulatory and Expert Services, and Mr. Amol Wayangankar, Director - Natural Gas & Oil, delivered a case study presentation entitled "Assessment of Market Access and Basis Risks for Gulf Coast LNG Terminals".  They examined the importation of LNG into Western Louisiana and how it affects LNG importation into Texas and other regions in the Gulf Coast, as well as the increasing role storage plays in managing a major gas supply portfolio.

Infocast's Carbon Reduction Project Development & Finance

Infocast brought together experienced carbon market players, developers, and financiers from around the globe and discussed topics that included developing, certifying, and financing profitable GHG emission reduction projects.

Mr. Chris Berendt, Director - Environmental Markets & Policy, presented insight on the interplay of RECs and carbon offsets at this conference.  Together, Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) and other renewable energy projects make up about a third of the voluntary OTC market.  Because RECs result from grid-connected renewable energy projects, the energy electrons from renewables are mixed with energy electrons from other forms of generation, leading to the question of how and if RECs should be converted into a tCO2e.  He discussed what developers and customers need to know about values and exchanges.

Canadian Institute's West Coast LNG Forum

The LNG industry faces many new challenges and issues particularly on the West Coast.  The Canadian Institute brought together important key players from this sector to discuss the economic development and the major projects occurring in this region.  Mr. Robert Linden, Director - Fuel Market Strategies, spoke on the "Competition for Secure Supply: How Asia-Pacific Markets Affect the Availability of LNG for North American Markets" at the Canadian Institute's forum.  He examined the current demand and usage of LNG in Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, as well as the impact of this demand on the availabilty of LNG for West Coast projects.  Mr. Linden also expanded the discussion to show which regions act as sources of LNG for the North American markets, and which other regions may be developing liquefaction capabilities that may be able to serve these markets in the future.

Global and North American gas supply and demand patterns are undergoing a period of rapid change.  Mr. James Diemer, Director - Fuels, Regulatory, & Expert Services, presented on the North American Natural Gas Review: Implications for the Mid-Continent.  The new infrastructure coming on-line together with the global linkages via LNG, introduces new pricing dynamics in the US natural gas market place.  These global and North American developments were presented along with the potential implications they have for midstream players and supply portfolios of end users in the mid-continent region.

SGA Fall Leadership Conference

This fall's Southern Gas Association (SGA) event offered topics on a wide range of issues dealing with the natural gas industry. 

Mr. Robert Linden, Director - Fuel Market Strategies, presented on Gas Supply and Pricing: LNG and Alternative Fuels.  His session focused on the Atlantic Basin LNG Market and the competition and complementarities found in this market.  Mr. Linden explained the costs, price and investment metrics of the North American exploration and production, as well as discussed the effects of the secular trends that dampen this region's gas price volatility. 

 

EEI Strategic Issues Roundtable

EEI offered an important forum in which key business experts from the electric power industry could gather to debate and address the critical energy issues of today. 

Mr. Luke Stuart, Vice President - Utility Programs, was invited to speak at the roundtable this fall.  He addressed what aspects of the utility planning process promote jumping on trends after they've largely played out, how can it be improved, and examples of potential pitfalls in today's trends through a session called Utility Corporate Planning - Getting Ahead of the Curve.

Pace Global joined Edison Electric Institute (EEI) member utility executives and associates at its annual roundtable event to discuss the critical issues that face the industry.  We were pleased to support the agenda by contributing our perspective on the topic “Aligning Regulatory Incentives with Utility Risk Management Programs”.  Scott Scholten, Executive Director – Pace Global Energy Risk Management, and Jack Nirenberg, Vice President – Utility & Risk Services, addressed the participants on how to align regulatory incentives with a structured risk management program in a way that lets utilities protect customers against market price volatility yet provides the risk-reward framework that regulators will be able to understand and accept.
